Spending Time with God - Introduction

We’re in the middle of a sermon series on God’s protection. Last week we looked at God’s perspective on protection, and on Sunday Yemi talked about being protected from all that surrounds us.  There are three more to go: ‘God provides for us’; ‘Protected on the Inside’; and ‘God has a plan and future’.

When Yemi was preaching on Sunday (watch here), he was looking at a story in the Bible (2 Kings 6:8-23)  about an attack by one army against another.  The attacking army planned well and knew that they could beat the other - the Israelites.  Their problem was a man, Elisha, had been spending time with God.  God told him what was going to happen, he told his people (the Israelites), and so helped them be ready.  That meant the attack wasn’t a surprise after all, and that meant the attack didn’t quite go to plan!

Often spending time with God increases our wisdom – especially about ourselves, those around us, and how we and they connect in the situations we’re in.  That can give us real insight into things that are hard in our lives.  Then, in that time with God, we can ask for strength and courage to not be afraid, and to tackle those tough things.  If we hang around a bit more, we find that God begins to change us.

You probably have an opinion about whether that’s true or not – maybe you believe it, maybe you don’t, or maybe you’re curious about whether it might ‘work’.  The only way to find out if it’s really true is to give it a go.  If you’d like to find out if spending time with God makes any difference, check in here each Wednesday between now and Easter to discover a way of spending time with God.  Why not experiment?
